frequently asked Questions

General :

What is the composition of Zanabili Aleppo soap?

Aleppo soap is mainly made up of two ingredients, olive oil and laurel berry oil. The proportions of both vegetable oils vary depending on the recipe, the know-how and the use of the soap. The price of laurel berry oil being higher than that of olive oil, the more it is present, the more expensive the soap will be.

The Zanabili house offers soaps with a laurel berry oil content ranging from 4% to 70%. Our house, thanks to its ancestral know-how, is the only one to achieve such proportions without the soap melting during manufacturing.

The soda, although part of the initial mixture, disappears almost completely during the numerous rinsings in the manufacturing process, to represent only a negligible percentage of the finished Aleppo soap (<0.5%).

Which Aleppo soap to choose?

It is the use you want to make of your Aleppo soap which should determine the proportion of laurel berry oil found in it. For example, if you want to combat skin problems, we advise you to choose a high laurel berry oil content of at least 24%. For more specific advice, we invite you to consult our customer service who will be happy to guide you.

Is our Aleppo soap organic?

The traditional Aleppo soap from Maison Zanabili is made according to an ancestral recipe, kept and faithfully perpetuated among the descendants of the Zanabili soap makers since 1842. The manufacturing process and the ingredients are therefore identical to what was done in the past, that is to say, non-aggressive processes that do not alter the ingredients, and oils from olives and laurel berries grown by farmers who do not use pesticides or other chemicals.

What is the difference between Aleppo soap and Marseille soap?

If there are similarities between these two soaps, it is because Marseille soap initially comes from Aleppo soap, its ancestor. Although the manufacturing process and composition of the two soaps are similar, they are two very distinct products. Their method of manufacture and ingredients have diverged at some point in history. While Aleppo soap is exclusively made with olive oil and laurel berry oil, Marseille soap can contain others such as palm oil, peanut, copra or even sesame.

Properties :

What are the benefits of Aleppo soap?

Aleppo soap has many virtues. For example, it fights acne, reduces or even eliminates the symptoms of skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis, and does not dry out, or only moderately, the skin. Thanks to the antiseptic properties of laurel berry oil, it can be a good alternative to shaving foam and reduce razor burn, if applied correctly.

Is Aleppo soap suitable for facial care?

Yes. Traditional Aleppo soap is ideal for problem skin. When its manufacturing and composition respect tradition, it offers qualities that regulate and maintain the biochemical properties of the skin. Our customers often tell us that after a few uses, their facial skin imperfections diminish or even disappear.

Is Aleppo soap suitable for washing hair?

Generally speaking, it depends on your hair, like with shampoos. Although traditional Aleppo soap (solid) has benefits for the hair and scalp, its use requires several washes afterwards. We find that liquid Aleppo soap is more suitable for this particular use, and we therefore highly recommend it. Solid or liquid, Aleppo soap is especially suitable for oily hair, which will regrease less quickly, allowing washing to be spaced out. It will also make your hair softer and shinier, and reduce dandruff. We do not recommend Aleppo soap for hair that is already dry at the base.
